Calgary Run for Water - September 10, 2011

Talisman Centre is Proud to be a GOLD Sponsor of Calgary Run for Water!

The inaugural Calgary Run For Water will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Eau Claire (Eau Claire aptly meaning “clear water”). It promises to be a high-quality 10K running and 5K run/walk event designed to raise awareness and funds for HOPE International Development Agency’s clean water projects in the Bonke region of Southern Ethiopia.

Calgary Run for Water is pleased to announce that Olympian Duff Gibson is our official spokesperson! See the attached press release to learn more about Duff’s personal connection to this project, and why the Gibson Family is so passionately committed to this particular event.

DID YOU KNOW?
FACT: Over 40,000 people die every week for lack of clean water; the majority of those are children under the age of 5.

FACT: Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-borne disease.

FACT: Roughly 80% of Ethiopians require improved drinking water facilities.

We invite you to check out this incredible 20 minute video called “A Thirst for Africa”. Peg Peters from Abbotsford Run for Water travels to Ethiopia with his twelve-year old daughter. Through their visits to communities with and without access to clean water, they begin to understand how it can be the answer to nearly every development issue an impoverished community faces: health, education, financial security, peace, human rights and gender equality.

HOW MUCH MAKES A DIFFERENCE?
FACT: $35 means one more person drinks clean water for life
$650 means two families can receive clean water and all of its benefits
$25,000 means an entire village can receive clean water for life
$160,000 means a capped spring and pipeline in southern Ethiopia

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
You can help raise awareness and funds for Hope International Development Agency by running or walking on September 10, and we hope you will encourage your friends and family to do the same!

IF RACING ISN'T FOR YOU, YOU CAN STILL GET INVOLVED!
Because of the generous support of our sponsors like Talisman Centre for Sport and Wellness, Calgary Run for Water is proud to say that 100% of your donation, fundraising proceeds and pledges will go directly to one of HOPE International Development Agency’s clean water projects in Ethiopia. There are also a variety of volunteer opportunities. This event needs the support of the whole community and every effort is considered a valued contribution!

Please consider joining us on Facebook and Twitter to lend your support and receive regular updates and valuable training tips!

LIghts, Camera, ACTION!

Over the next few weeks Talisman Centre will be filming short clips from of our Group Fitness classes. These clips will be used for promotional purposes on our website, Facebook, and YouTube. Help us show the rest of Calgary how great our classes are! Participate in the classes and you could be caught on film!

For those that are camera shy, no need to worry - we will only be filming a few classes each week and the camera will only be there for a short 10-15 minutes.

Whether you’re looking for your 15 minutes of fame or prefer to stay behind the scenes, all classes that will be filmed are marked on the online Group Fitness Schedule and there are many more that are camera free. So, please plan your workout schedule accordingly.

Each class participant will be required to sign an image release allowing us to use the footage for promotional use.

Building Temperature

We have been experiencing higher than normal temperatures over the last little while in the tented portion of the building. Our Facility Manager has been working with the Engineering Roof teams to trouble shoot and find the right solution. They have looked into the building fans ,motors, chillers and made adjustments and will continue to do so to try and get the temperature down as well as looking at longer more permanent fixes. In the meantime and until the issue is completely resolved with a permanent fix, we will be implementing short term solutions to make everyone more comfortable. Extra fans will be brought in and used in the areas most impacted along with ongoing mechanical adjustments.
